CHAPTER 9 - STRINGS OF RESILIENCE

From an early age, I was taught to use my time wisely and kept myself engaged with music, Bharatanatyam, and academics throughout the day.

As a child, I was exposed to music through my mother, a vocal teacher, and naturally became a skilled singer by age 9, but a vocal cord injury forced me to give up singing and shift my focus to the Veena. After learning basic veena from my mother, I got the opportunity to train under a renowned guru and earned a government scholarship. After my scholarship ended, I began teaching Veena alongside my engineering studies to help cover my tuition fees.I was driven by passion and was excelling in prestigious competitions.

I moved to a new town after marriage, where playing veena continued to be a constant in my life. Although I had not planned my future in detail, I soon realized that a quiet domestic life did not suit me—I craved for more. I went back to books and studied hard to add qualifications like M.B.A & M.Sc relevant to pursue a teaching career. A new chapter began where I balanced roles as a lecturer, musician, homemaker, wife, and mother. It wasn’t a burden; these were choices that I had made. My days were full, and so was my life.

That was definitely a different chapter of my life, and now I find myself in a new phase—navigating circumstances I did not choose, but face I must, nonetheless.

Progress takes time. I am confident things will improve. Some skills return easily, others with effort—but I’m working hard to regain my abilities, encouraged by those who recognize my resilience. My motto: “Keep trying till you achieve” “ MaraLi Yathnava Maadu”- D.V.Gundappa.

I practice deep gratitude for every small movement my body regains and often wonder if infants feel the same joy when they learn new skills, as I do in relearning skills!
